Planning your Pressure Washing Business
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to either use a pressure washer or watch one being used you may have been intrigued by the notion that you could build a business around the activity. If so, you are not alone in that realization, as pressure washing business endeavors have been growing by leaps and bounds in recent years. The simple truth is that there is a big world out there that needs professional cleaning, and few individuals and small businesses have the resources or desire to purchase and maintain the equipment necessary to perform the type of cleaning for which pressure washers are best known. Of course, planning a successful pressure washing business involves more than simply realizing that the opportunity exists.
The first step to planning your pressure washing business is to decide which market you want to target. Basically, the pressure washing market can be divided into two broad categories: residential cleaning and commercial washing. Though there is some variety within each category, the types of jobs you will be doing are most easily defined within one or the other. In general, most residential customers will require lighter cleaning jobs – decks, gutters, siding, and concrete work that typically involves the removal of dirt and debris. Commercial pressure washing jobs often involve heavier grease and oil that requires more expensive machinery to effectively remove. As a result, many people begin their pressure washing business activity with a focus on residential work because of the lower start-up costs.
Many people who begin a new business – especially a new contractor business – make the mistake of simply copying the methodology of their competitors. Your plan should be to learn where your competitors are, which markets they service, and what they charge. Then you need to take it a step further and develop a plan to aggressively compete with them at every level. Offer lower rates and faster cleaning times, and be ready to customize your hours and activities to ensure client satisfaction.
Be sure to develop a plan that lists exactly what type of cleaning you plan to do. If your pressure washing business is geared toward residential cleaning, list those jobs you foresee doing. In similar fashion, list all of the commercial services that you offer. Remember that pressure washing extends beyond the obvious stationary surfaces and can include fleets of vehicles, garages, greasy kitchens, and many more that you may not have even considered yet.
Finally, give some thought to the vendor that you will use for your pressure washing business equipment. Your obvious choices will be to either lease or rent the equipment that you will use. Either option can work for you when you are first starting a new business, and both should entail the same level of care in the selection of your vendor. Make sure that you buy or lease from someone who offers full support for their product. By properly planning your pressure washing business before you begin, you will help to provide yourself with the greatest opportunity to achieve success.
